How ESTA Works for German Nationals
According to the US Department of State and US Customs and Border Protection, a German citizen with an eligible e-passport can apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization, known as ESTA, entirely online before travel. An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years, or until the passport expires if that happens sooner, and it allows unlimited entries for stays of up to 90 days per visit. The current ESTA fee is 40.27 US dollars, paid directly to the US government through the official ESTA website.
Your passport must be a valid e-passport with a digital chip and a machine readable biographic page. An ESTA application can be submitted at any point before travel, though the US government recommends applying as soon as a trip is being planned.
An approved ESTA is not a visa. It only indicates that a traveler appears eligible under the Visa Waiver Program, and a Customs and Border Protection officer still makes the final decision on admission at the US port of entry.
When ESTA Does Not Work and a Full Visa Is Required
Official US government guidance sets out specific cases where a German national is not eligible for ESTA and must apply for a full B1/B2 visitor visa instead:
- You have traveled to or been present in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011, with limited exceptions for diplomatic or military travel.
- You have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021.
- You hold dual nationality with Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.
- Your ESTA application is denied for any other reason, including a past US visa refusal.
- You plan to stay in the United States longer than 90 days, or your trip is for a purpose not permitted under the Visa Waiver Program, such as paid work or study for credit.
If any of these apply to you, ESTA is not an option regardless of your German nationality. The only route to the United States is a standard nonimmigrant visa application, including a DS-160 form and a consular interview, the same process followed by nationalities outside the Visa Waiver Program.
