The B1/B2 is the United States visitor visa. B1 covers business travel such as meetings, conferences, negotiations and training. B2 covers tourism, visiting family and friends, and medical treatment. Most travellers from the UAE are issued the combined B1/B2, which lets you do either.
It is not a work visa. You cannot take employment in the United States on it, and you cannot study on it beyond short recreational courses.
The base set is the same for everyone. What changes is the proof of what you do and how you fund the trip.
The DS-160 is filled online and submitted before the interview. It asks for your personal details, passport history, family, education, work history, previous US travel, security questions and your travel plan. It takes most people a couple of hours if they have their papers in front of them.
Three things trip applicants up. First, the form times out, so answers are lost if you leave it. Second, names and dates must match your passport exactly. Third, once submitted it cannot be edited, only refiled. We prepare it with you and check it before submission, which is why it is part of every package.
The interview itself is short, often only a few minutes. The officer has already read your DS-160. What they are testing is whether your story is consistent and whether you intend to return.
Answer in short, direct sentences. Know your travel dates, who is paying and where you will stay. Do not memorise a script, because officers notice. Bring your documents in order even though you may not be asked for all of them.
The US government charges a machine readable visa fee, the MRV fee, of USD 185 per applicant. It is not refundable and it is not transferable to another person. It has to be paid before an appointment can be booked.
