Waiting Is Normal, But You Can Still Check
After a US visitor visa interview, most UAE residents want to know one thing right away: what happens now. There are a few official ways to check your status, and knowing which one applies to your situation saves a lot of unnecessary worry.
The Three Outcomes at the Interview
A consular officer issues a decision at the end of most interviews. There are three general outcomes: the visa is approved and processed for issuance, the application is refused, or the case is placed into administrative processing for further review. Which of these applies to you is normally stated to you directly at the end of your interview.
If your case needs more review
Administrative processing means your case needs further review before a final decision can be made. Official guidance is specific about how to handle this waiting period. Except in genuine emergencies, such as a serious illness or death in the immediate family, applicants are asked to wait at least 180 days from the date of interview before inquiring about the status of a case in administrative processing.
At the end of that review, the consular officer will conclude either that you are now qualified for the visa or that you remain ineligible. This is a case by case process, and no service or agent can influence how it is handled.
Checking Your Case Online
The Department of State’s Consular Electronic Application Center, known as CEAC, lets applicants check the current status of their nonimmigrant visa application online. Official guidance recommends waiting at least three business days after your interview before checking, since the system may not yet reflect your appointment before that.
If your case remains open longer than expected, note that the National Visa Center is generally unable to respond to nonimmigrant visa inquiries. For an approved or refused B1/B2 case, questions should go to the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the US Consulate General in Dubai directly, through their published contact channels.
Tracking your passport
Once a visa is issued, your passport still needs to be returned to you through the appointed courier system. Many applicants can check passport status by emailing the passport status address linked from their embassy or consulate website, or through the online passport tracking tool for their post. You will typically receive an email and a text message once your passport is ready for collection, and it must usually be collected within a set number of days.
What Not to Do While Waiting
Do not submit duplicate inquiries or a brand new DS-160 out of impatience. A second application does not speed anything up and can create confusion between two open case records. Keep your DS-160 confirmation number and interview receipt somewhere safe, since you may need them to follow up.
