Can an Indian living in the UAE renew a US visa by dropbox in India? Yes, if you meet every interview waiver condition, you can apply through the US Mission in India’s interview waiver (dropbox) process in 2026. The catch: the Mission’s appointment site says you must be present in India when you submit, and it asks you to allow up to three weeks without your passport. With the dropbox not available in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, this is the most practical renewal route for many Indian residents of the UAE.
US Mission UAE status, checked 24 September 2026: “While the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai are open, routine visa processing is not available in the United Arab Emirates at this time.” (US Embassy and Consulate in the UAE, Visas page, updated 18 September 2026). The State Department also tells applicants to book in their “country of residence or nationality”, which is why India is an option for Indian passport holders.
Is the US visa dropbox open in India in 2026?
Yes. The India page on ustraveldocs.com, the official appointment information site for India, describes the interview waiver route as running, with drop-off at “one of our eleven locations”. Appointments are booked on usvisascheduling.com.
Has anything changed in 2026? We found no 2026 change to the waiver criteria on the US Mission India website or the India ustraveldocs pages. The criteria still follow the State Department’s Interview Waiver Update of 18 September 2025, in force since 1 October 2025, which ended the old 48-month window. The 2026 changes we did find are practical ones:
- From 25 May 2026 the consular exchange rate changed from 96 to 98 rupees per US dollar (US Mission India Visas page).
- Visa enquiries in India now go to support-india [at] usvisascheduling.com (US Mission India Visas page).
- The India ustraveldocs page carries two notes with no date shown: you “MUST be present in India during” the waiver submission, and you must book your drop-off at least 15 calendar days before the 12-month deadline (explained below). Treat both as current rules.
US visa dropbox eligibility for Indians: the 12-month rule
You need to meet every line of this checklist, taken from the India ustraveldocs “Renew my visa” page and the State Department rule. Each family member must meet it separately.

This is our reading of the 15-day note on the India page. Leave extra margin, because appointment dates may not be free on the exact day.

Where to drop off: VAC and drop-off locations in India
The India pages list five Visa Application Centres (VACs) and six extra document drop-off points, which matches the “eleven locations” on the renewal page. The scheduling system shows which ones you can book.

Interview waiver submissions at the VACs run Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. At the six drop-off points, the India page says a delivery charge of 1,200 rupees per application has applied since 24 February 2025, payable in cash or online when you submit. What to bring on drop-off day
- Your interview waiver appointment letter
- Your current passport
- Your DS-160 confirmation page
- Your previous passport containing the US visa (the original, not photocopies)
- One colour photo, 5 cm x 5 cm, white background, taken within the last six months, with no eyeglasses (see our US visa photo guide)
Bring only what is listed. The India page warns that “other documents will not be returned and will be destroyed.” The residency proof mentioned on that page (such as an OCI card or Indian employment visa) is for foreign nationals living in India. As an Indian citizen you apply on your Indian passport.
Check your DS-160 carefully. The US Mission India says that if you correct a DS-160 after booking, you must bring both the original confirmation page used to book and the corrected one, or cancel and rebook with the corrected application number. Timing and travel planning from the UAE
- Allow three weeks without your passport. The India page says “Please allow up to three weeks for interview waiver processing”, that you “will not be able to pick up your passport during this time” and that the process cannot be expedited. You cannot fly back to the UAE without your passport, so plan your leave around this.
- Pay the fee in India. The B1/B2 fee is USD 185, paid in rupees at the consular exchange rate. A fee paid in the UAE cannot be transferred to India.
- Book early and book once. The India page limits reschedules. If you reach the limit and cancel, “the fee payment will become invalid”. Cancel at least two business days before if you cannot attend, or you are marked a no-show.
- Collect near where you stay. Your passport comes back to the location you chose when booking. VACs also open for passport collection on Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Keep your UAE side in order. Check that your UAE residence and Emirates ID stay valid for your return date.
- Do not buy a US ticket yet. The India page says: “Do not buy a ticket or make firm travel plans until you have your renewed visa in hand.”
If the officer wants to see you, you must attend an interview at the post that holds your case. On 17 September 2026 the State Department listed these next available B1/B2 interview waits: Chennai 7.5 months, Hyderabad 12 months, Kolkata 6.5 months, Mumbai 11.5 months and New Delhi 10 months. If you do not qualify for the dropbox
You can still apply in India with an interview, using the waits above. Or you can keep a place in the UAE queue, which showed 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi for B1/B2 on the same date, while routine processing stays suspended.
