If your US visa is expiring or has expired and you live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the quick dropbox renewal is not an option in the UAE right now. The US Mission suspended routine visa services in the UAE on 1 March 2026, and the interview waiver (dropbox) is part of routine processing. This guide walks you through the four questions that decide what you can actually do instead.

Where things stand in the UAE
- Routine visa processing: not available in the UAE, according to the US Embassy’s UAE visas page. The Mission’s notice of 1 March 2026 says it will contact applicants with cancelled appointments when routine services resume.
- Interview waiver (dropbox) renewals: not being taken in Dubai or Abu Dhabi while routine services are suspended.
- Where to apply meanwhile: the embassy tells nonimmigrant applicants to use a US embassy or consulate in their country of residence or nationality.
- Published interview wait: 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi for B1/B2 (State Department update of 17 September 2026).

Question 1: would you qualify for the waiver at all?
Since the State Department’s update of 18 September 2025, a visitor visa renewal can skip the interview only if every one of these is true:

Children under 14 and adults over 79 lost their automatic exemption in September 2025, so families renewing together should expect interviews for every member unless another waiver category applies.
Question 2: can you wait for the UAE to reopen?
If your trip is flexible, the simplest route is to prepare now and apply the moment the Mission announces that routine services have resumed. Have your DS-160 information, passport, photo, old visa copy and supporting documents ready. When services restart, the first weeks are likely to be busy, so being ready early matters more than anything else.
Question 3: can you apply in your home country?
The waiver rules allow an application in your country of nationality. If you meet every condition in the table and you can spend time at home, a renewal at the US embassy there may be possible without an interview. Check that embassy’s own website for its current appointment situation and its waiver instructions before you book anything. Applying in a third country where you are neither a citizen nor a resident is generally not accepted.
Question 4: is your travel a genuine emergency?
The Mission handles real emergencies, such as urgent medical travel, separately from routine work. Wanting an earlier ordinary appointment is not an emergency, and requests that are not urgent will not be treated as one. If your case is urgent, prepare documentary evidence, such as a hospital letter, before you contact the Mission.
Mistakes that cost UAE residents time and money
- Paying the USD 185 MRV fee before you know where and how you will apply. It is non refundable and non transferable.
- Booking flights before the visa is issued.
- Following guides written before September 2025 or before March 2026.
- Assuming a family can renew together through the dropbox. Children under 14 now need an interview.

Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my US visa in Abu Dhabi without an interview in 2026?
Not at the moment. Routine visa processing, which includes interview waiver renewals, is not available in the UAE. The Mission will post an update when routine services resume.
My US visa expired six months ago. Do I qualify for the dropbox?
You may meet the timing rule, because it expired less than 12 months ago, but you also need a full validity visa, to have been 18 or older when it was issued, no refusals and no ineligibility. Even then, the dropbox is not open in the UAE right now.
Can I renew my US visa in my home country instead?
Yes, the rules allow you to apply in your country of nationality. If you meet all the waiver conditions, that embassy may renew without an interview, depending on its own rules and capacity.
How long is the US visa interview wait from the UAE?
The State Department’s 17 September 2026 update listed 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi for B1/B2 interviews. Those dates only matter once routine services resume.
Will my cancelled appointment be rebooked?
The Mission’s 1 March 2026 notice says applicants whose appointments were cancelled will be contacted to reschedule when routine services resume.
